The Julius Baer Generation Cup is the 7th event of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and takes place from 18-25 September on chess24.com. The event featured 16 world-class players spanning the age spectrum, but the field got cut in half yesterday as the preliminary stage of the event concluded. The top eight players advanced to the Knockout stage: Magnus Carlsen, Arjun Erigaisi, Hans Niemann, Praggnanandhaa, Vincent Keymer, Le Quang Liem, Christopher Yoo and Levon Aronian, and Magnus Carlsen and Arjun Erigaisi earned their spots for the Final match after defeating their opponents in the quarterfinals and semi-finals.
Magnus Carlsen defeated the Indian prodigy in the first match of the final with a convincing 2.5-0.5 score. Detailed recap can be found here
The final match will determine the winner of the Julius Baer Generation Cup and will be played over two days 24-25 September with two 4-game rapid matches. If the result is 1-1 after two played matches, the winner will be determined in the playoffs. The play-off consists of 2 blitz games, followed by an Armageddon game if the score is 1-1. “It will be very interesting to play against Magnus Carlsen and I think I will learn a lot from it“, said Erigaisi after his semi-final victory yesterday.
